With stacking and sorting toys, toddlers practice grasping, fitting shapes through holes, ordering sizes and naming colors, and parents can talk through each step with them. The six below are wooden or mostly wooden, with age ranges from each maker.
Every specification on this page comes from the manufacturer’s own product page, checked on 26 October 2026. We have not used these products ourselves, so the picks are based on published specifications only.
For choosing toys by stage, see our toddler toys and books guide, toddler development guide and toddler activities.

- Age range given by the maker.
- Pieces and materials described.
- Safety or materials information published where the maker provides it.
Always follow the maker’s age guidance and check toys for loose or broken parts. Age ranges below come from each maker’s own product listing.

1. PlanToys Stacking Ring – Mouse: for a first ring stacker
The Stacking Ring Mouse has five rings, a mouse head and a base. PlanToys lists fine motor skills, logical thinking and problem-solving among its benefits.
- Sustainably made in Thailand from chemical-free rubberwood (PlanToys).
Pros: classic first stacker; bendable rod.
